Gah.

Had a fit of masochism and decided to watch the first episode of the US remake of Life on Mars, just to see what they'd done with it. And, um...well. The less said the better, really.

I think the biggest problem it had was that it wasn't sure what it wanted to be, a faithful copy of the original or its own story, and ended up falling down somewhere between the two. So that although it is almost scene-by-scene identical for large chunks of the episode, right down to dialogue and direction...it also over-simplifies the plot tremendously. You could argue that this is because the story has to be compressed into a much shorter airing time, 60 minutes reduced to 40...but they also veered off on rather a major, time-consuming tangent all of their own as a result of the plot changes, sacrificing characterisation for action. There was none of the polish and finesse of the original, and certainly none of the charisma. Where every single character in the original is bursting with personality and individuality right from the first moment, the characters here are almost uniformly bland. Even Gene, incredibly enough considering what an important character he is for the original - in this he made barely any impression at all!

Bland, in fact, is the best word to describe the episode - and probably the last word anyone would use to describe the original, which was so vibrant and eye-catching and had such instant impact.

Bleurgh. Well, I wanted to see what they've done with it, and now I know. They have butchered it. I think I'll just stick with the original, thanks all the same!

Posted a few more of the icons I've been experimenting with to my website. None of them brilliant, but I'm still learning. Just upgraded my copy of Photoshop to 7.0, which means lots of new buttons to get used to! I might yet end up being scared back to Elements 2.0...

Samples:

And the rest can be found here:
Supernatural
The Professionals
Life on Mars
Rome
Miscellaneous

Ooh, also, check out the very pretty and oh so cool LoM banner made for me by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] galathea_snb, whose art everyone should check out:

Fantastic!

[livejournal.com profile] rhianne recently posted a list of top five canon h/c moments that had inspired her...except that this top five was actually a top ten, five of which were from Supernatural. Understandable, since if ever a show invited h/c, it's SN! And that got me thinking about some of my own favourite moments (which is the point where [livejournal.com profile] galathea_snb faints away dead on the spot at the very idea of me making a list!). Actually, it's tempting to just repost [livejournal.com profile] rhianne's SN moments as I agree with them all! But I shall make myself do the list thing for myself, because I never do.

I enjoy a spot of good, strong h/c, I really do, but I find on reflection that my top moments in fandom, any fandom, tend to be a more random mixture, sometimes h/c and sometimes tiny moments where the strength of a partnership/friendship really shines through, significant moments in the development of an onscreen relationship, or tiny moments that illuminate a particular aspect of a character's personality.

'Ware possible spoilers herein for more than one show:

Have been attempting a bit of Life on Mars art recently, since my DVD set arrived and I've been reminding myself why I love this show so much.

Poor bewildered Sam, spending the entire season trying not to have a total meltdown. And Gene! Gotta love Gene.

Anyway, here's a few pieces - none of them brilliant, but the experimentation process has been interesting.

You are surrounded by Armed Bastards!

Because I love that quote by Gene in episode two! And for no better reason than that.

And then two walls featuring the creepy Test Card girl freaking Sam out.

Your Only Friend

This shows the first time the Test Card girl appears to Sam in the second episode. Sam already thinks he's going mad, and now the test card girl comes out of the television and starts speaking to him...

Sleep Forever

This is taken from episode three, when Sam is trying so hard to keep fighting, but feels it is a losing battle - and the Test Card girl really doesn't help.
"Give up. Lie down. Close your eyes. And sleep. Sleep forever..."

Next, I might have a go at that moment when Gene and Sam lock a murder suspect in a giant fridge...

Textures: Misplaced Moments and Until My Dying Day
Caps: 1973, almost dinnertime

And, on a completely different note, my cousin Jason emailed me some pictures of his new baby, Mark.

Mark with big sister Maraid

Isn't he adorable? And Maraid, the five-year-old, looks like a little angel here - but she really, really isn't!
