Feb. 7th, 2006 07:05 amWas very interested to hear on the news last night all about the latest development in the excavation of the Newport ship. The discovery of a French coin placed between the keel and stem post is both culturally significant, and helps with the precise dating of the ship - the coin was minted between 1440 and 1456.
This follows the earlier discovery of an Iron Age skeleton underneath the ship...
It's a fascinating site. Hopefully the discoveries will continue for as long as the funding lasts.
